Antique Persian Heriz Room Size Carpet

A wool pile of symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. Heriz carpet are usually the souls of tried-and-true design protocols, but occasionally, as here, something gets strikingly weird. Around the small, square navy central square with a stepped lozenge within, are horizontal and vertical short strips in red, blues, ivory, pistachio, and straw, with vases, flowers, turtle palmettes, and serrated leaves. These strips are symmetrically laid in all four quarters. The narrow main border displays turtles, leaves and crosshatch squares, on a dark blue, almost black, ground. A truly unique Heriz.
